Cotton, Rayon or Georgette: Which Fabric Is Right for You?

The fabric decides how a garment feels, falls and lasts. Two kurtis with the same design can feel completely different, so it helps to know what you are buying.

Cotton

Breathable, soft and easy to care for. Ideal for hot and humid weather and daily wear. It can wrinkle and may shrink a little in the first wash, so choose a size with some room.

Rayon

A smooth, drapey fabric that feels cool on the skin. It flows well and takes bright prints beautifully. Wash gently, and avoid wringing hard.

Georgette

Light and slightly textured with a graceful fall. Popular for sarees, dupattas and party wear. It usually needs a lining, and delicate washing helps it last.

Crepe

Has a subtle crinkled texture and drapes nicely. Good for dresses and co-ord sets, and it resists wrinkles better than cotton.

Chanderi and silk blends

Have a soft sheen that looks festive without being heavy. Good for sarees and dressy suits. Many need gentle or dry cleaning.

Which one should you pick?

  • Summer and humidity: cotton, light rayon.
  • Office: cotton blends, crepe.
  • Weddings and festivals: georgette, chanderi, silk blends.
  • Travel: crepe and rayon, which pack well.

Read the label

Check the fabric composition and care instructions on each product page. When in doubt, wash in cold water, dry in shade and avoid harsh detergents.
