How to Pick Your Kurti Size: A Simple Home Measuring Guide
2 min read
Sizes differ from brand to brand, which is why a medium in one store feels like a small in another. The reliable way to buy clothes online is to use your own measurements. All you need is a soft measuring tape and a few minutes.
What you need
- A soft tailor's tape (not a metal one).
- Light, fitted clothing or innerwear.
- A mirror, or a friend to help.
Step 1: Bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it level across your back. It should be snug but not tight. Breathe normally and note the number.
Step 2: Waist
Measure around the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button. Do not pull in your stomach.
Step 3: Hips
Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Step 4: Preferred length
Measure from the top of your shoulder to where you want the kurti to end. Do the same on a kurti you already love, and use that number as your reference for length.
Compare with the size chart
Open the size chart on the product page and match your bust first, since that is the hardest to alter. Kurtis are generally cut with a little ease, so the garment measurement is usually a couple of inches larger than the body measurement. If the chart lists "garment" measurements, choose one that is 2 to 3 inches bigger than your body measurement for a comfortable fit.
When you are between sizes
- Choose the larger size for flowy, A-line and straight cuts.
- Choose the smaller size only if the fabric has some stretch and you like a fitted look.
- For Anarkali and flared styles, prioritise the bust and shoulder fit, because the skirt has plenty of room.
Common mistakes
- Measuring over thick clothing.
- Pulling the tape too tight.
- Ignoring the kurti length, then being surprised by a short hemline.
- Assuming your size is the same across fabrics. Cotton can shrink slightly, while rayon stays soft and loose.
